Social science is a dynamic and fluid subject area. It cover multiple specialities that give insight in to how our world works and the factors that affect it. Through the study of Criminology, Psychology, Politics and more, you will be able to develop the skills and knowledge required for progression in social science. 

Social science can help in various areas of employment and academia. Politics, business, social work, teaching and law are just some of the areas that can be accessed through studying Social Science. The skills developed through the HN program are highly valued by employers  with the ability to research, analyse and evaluate information being a key aspect of this course. 

You will be looking at various aspects that influence our social, cultural and individuals lives. You will develop a set of highly transferable skills whilst on this course, with access to a strong student support base in the college.

Who is the course for?

The HND Social Science course is designed to be accessed by those with an interest in social science and humanities. 

You may be leaving school and wishing to study the subjects more in depth or you may be a mature student who is looking for a change in career. 

What will I study?

The HND Social Science is designed to give you a strong grasp of multiple specialities within Social Science. You will study a range of topics including: 

  • Psychology
  • Criminology
  • Politics
  • History
  • Sociology. 

You will consider various aspects of the above topics whilst developing your academic skills, problem solving and critical analysis skills. 

Next step course options

Following completion of your HND Social Science you can articulate into Year 2-3 of some university programs. Your lecturer and universities can advise further on this.

Some students may progress into employment with business, police and social work being areas that some learners progress to. 

How will I be assessed?

The course uses a variety of assessment methods including: 

  • Closed books
  • Open Book
  • Posters
  • Presentations

Your lecturer will advise you of the assessment type in advance, and we have a learning hub on site to help you with study skills and assessment preparation.

The HND Social Science is a popular course that supports students wishing to progress to employment or further study. 

Previous students have progressed to law, psychology degrees, criminology programs and much more. Students can articulate into 2nd or 3rd year or university.

Where can this course lead?

An HND Social Science an open up multiple employment options for you. It is a good basis from which to start building your career and academic pathway. This research, interpretation skills developed are transferable across multiple specialties, including areas such as business and teaching. 

You may wish to progress in social science research, working in politics as a political research, begin your journey towards becoming a registered psychologist. 

What are the entry requirements?

For entry to this course you will require one or more of the following: 

  • Minimum of one Higher at C grade or above , preferably in a social science subject such as Modern Studies, Psychology, Politics, 
  • SWAP Access to Social Sciences with a minimum of CCC grading profile. 
  • NQ in Social Sciences level 6 or 
  • Other relevant NQ grouping at SCQF level 5/6 or 
  • Equivalent award
  • Successful interview
  • Personal statement detailing what you are applying for the course and what you wish to do after. 

What are the interview arrangements?

If successful you will be given an interview date and time. If this is not suitable, you should contact admissions to re-arrange.

The interview will consist of a short presentation on the course and an individual discussion with a course team member. 

Please bring evidence of your qualifications to the interview. If you are waiting for results, please bring evidence of your current qualifications. 

Fees, finance and funding

Fees for full time is £1285

This course is eligible for SAAS.

Other information:

The college is located near the town centre and has free onsite car parking. 

The library provides access to physical textbooks as well as an extensive online library. With student support on site for funding, counselling and general advice you are well placed for having a positive learning experience. 

Please note that the funding for HND Social Science is via SAAS.
