SWAP SOCIAL WORK AND SOCIAL STUDIES

Intro to the course:

This Scottish Wider Access program is designed for students who have an interested in study and progression in Social Work, Social studies such as Psychology, History, Sociology, Politics etc. 

The SWAP programs allow a return to formal education for mature students who perhaps wish a change in career, do not have qualifications and have the focus to commit themselves to studying and progressing to University or an HNC/D program. 

There are a range of subjects that you will cover such as: 

  • Psychology
  • Safeguarding
  • Numeracy
  • Communications 
  • Sociology
  • Mental Health 
  • And more. 

The units range from SCQF level 5 to SCQF level 6. 

Within the course, is a unit called ‘Preparation for HE’ which is designed to support you in developing your skills for transition to University or HNC, on successful completion of the program. This unit will also help you enhance your digital skills and study skills. 

At various points in the course, you will be able to visit University campuses and engage with external speakers.

Who is the course for?

This course is designed to support mature students who wish to return to education. 

You are expected to have been out of formal education for at least 3 years. 

The course is focussed on ensuring you have the theoretical knowledge required to progress to Higher Education be it within college, or at university. 

 

What will I study?

The unit contents within the course are designed to ensure you meet the requirements of Higher Education Institutes and the HN programs. 

You will study Safeguarding and the legal aspects of protecting vulnerable groups. In our psychology units, you will look at human behaviour and the benefits of being able to understand it. Within Sociology, you will begin to develop a knowledge base on the workings of society and the fluidity of our world. 

Additionally, you will study criminology units, to help build your awareness of the reasons for crime occurring and measures in place to reduce it.

This exciting and dynamic course supports progression to further study in areas such as:

On successful completion of this program, you could progress to a course with one of our University partners, or an HNC/D program such as:

  • HNC Social Services
  • HNC Working with Communities
  • HND Social science

Your course tutors would help review your options and consider the best progression route for yourself. 

How will I be assessed?

The assessment approaches vary between units depending on the requirements. 

Assessment approaches can include: 

  • Closed book exams
  • Open book exams
  • Posters
  • Presentation

Your lecturer for each unit will advise on the assessment approach and timescales. 

If you are worried about assessments, you can seek support from the ‘Learning hub’ within the college.

This course is taught with tutor support and uses the expertise of lecturers who have experience within the fields of social work, social science and care sector.  

With access to a library, computer suite and on site learning support, you will be supported in your progression and have access to excellent resources.

What are the entry requirements?

  • Out of education for a minimum of 3 years.
  • No previous undergraduate/post graduate degree. 
  • Personal statement detailing your reasons for applying for the course. 
  • Successful interview held on campus

You may be telephoned by a lecturer to discuss your application.

Fees for full time is £1008

This course is eligible for Bursary.

Other information:

This course is full time (3.5 days a week) and there is a significant amount of studying involved. It important that you ensure you will be able to allow for studying time out-with timetabled classes.

On campus, we have fantastic facilities in terms of extended learning support, study skill workshops, counselling service for students and the student service team on site to help with enquiries.
