Intro to the course:

This introductory course is designed for those at the start of  their career in in the hairdressing industry. It will allow possible progression to a SVQ level 3 Hairdressing apprenticeship course. It will introduce you to a range of hairdressing techniques and skills needed for a successful career in the industry.

Who is the course for?

For apprentices who are employed in the hairdressing industry

What will I study?

You'll develop practical skills, and gain essential knowledge and valuable salon experience. 

The course covers 

  • Shampoo, condition and treat the hair and scalp
  • Set, style and dress hair
  • Cut and clipper hair using hairdressing techniques
  • Consult, assess, plan and prepare for hair services 
  • Dry, style and finish hair 
  • Instruct and advise on products and services 

 Realistic working environments will be a part of the course.

Next step course options

Trainees may progress to Modern Apprenticeship SVQ 3 Hairdressing.

How will I be assessed?

Practical assessments will be carried out under observation. Essential knowledge will be achieved through SQA Solar

What are the entry requirements?

  • Places are open to 16-24 year olds only 
  • Potential candidates must be in full-time employment 
  • Highly motivated and have creative and artistic skills 
  • Candidates must reach the eligibility criteria required to qualify for funding 
  • Successful performance at interview

What are the interview arrangements?

Employers and apprentices should contact the college alternative funding department or the Hairdressing curriculum manager.

Fees for other is £700

Fees for part time is £770

Other information:

Practical assessments will be undertaken within purpose built salons and the students workplace. The course will be delivered by lecturing staff who have current industry experience


Part time course: This course will be delivered 6 hours per day, one day per week for 36 weeks
