South Lanarkshire College is delighted to have been chosen by the Scottish and Northern Ireland Plumbing Employers’ Federation (SNIPEF) as the venue for the 39th annual Scottish Plumbing Apprentice of the Year (SPAY) competition on 7 June 2024.

The SPAY competition showcases the talents and commitment of plumbing apprentices across Scotland, highlighting the crucial role the profession plays in supporting the national economy, its infrastructure and the nation’s low-carbon transition.

The contest is structured to evaluate apprentices' practical abilities across three distinct categories: Copper, Lead, and the official introduction of a Renewable Technologies category, demonstrating a commitment to environmental sustainability.

Stella McManus, Principal and Chief Executive of South Lanarkshire College, said, "We are delighted that South Lanarkshire College has been selected as the official venue for the 2024 Scottish Plumbing Apprentice of the Year competition. This selection reflects our college's commitment to educational excellence and showcases our state-of-the-art facilities."

Stella added, "South Lanarkshire College’s training programmes are designed to have a profound impact not only on our students but also on the local community and the broader Scottish economy, ensuring that we equip our learners with the skills necessary to thrive in their professions.

“This recognition serves as a clear indicator of the success and value of our college, further solidifying our position as a leading institution in education within Scotland."

Speaking about the competition’s evolution and alignment with the profession’s growing sustainability requirements, Stephanie Lowe, Deputy Chief Executive of SNIPEF, said: "The ongoing revision of Scotland’s Modern Apprenticeship in Plumbing and Heating, now integrating additional renewable technology skills, underscores SNIPEF’s steadfast commitment to preparing apprentices for pivotal roles in facilitating our nation's transition towards a low-carbon and sustainable future.

“The SPAY competition, along with our current work on assisting the profession to upskill its workforce, embodies our commitment to fostering excellence and innovation in the plumbing profession."
