Who is the course for?

What will I study?

Unlock your potential in the world of photography and creative digital media!   On this course, you will learn how to use a digital camera like a pro and master the art of managing your digital files. Plus, you will get a solid introduction to post-production with Adobe Photoshop to take your images to the next level.  

Podcasting is a fantastic way to share your ideas, connect with an audience and even build a community.  Learn how to create some content and set up your podcast in our new Podcasting studio 

What you will also learn:

  • Portraiture and Still Life Photography
  • Digital Imaging and use of AI

But that's not all. You will also work on collaborative projects, and get the chance to showcase your work at an exciting end-of-year exhibition. Perfect for those who want to grow their skills and build a creative portfolio.

Next step course options

Successful completion will give you direct entry to our HNC or HND in Photography.  On successful completion, you may then be eligible to apply for entry to Year 3 of a Photography Degree course.  Entry will be at the discretion of the University. 

Over the past few years, we have supported the progression of some of our HND Photography students to Degree courses at Glasgow School of Art, Edinburgh College of Art, City of Glasgow College and Gray’s School of Art. 

How will I be assessed?

Ongoing written and mainly practical assessments throughout the year.  You will be asked to submit work to meet specified deadlines reflecting the importance placed upon working to deadlines within the creative industries.  You will also create a quality portfolio of work through which you will learn to evaluate and critique your own work. 

Why should I choose this course?

Start from scratch and master it all as we guide you through a wide range of photographic techniques, from portraiture to landscape. You will work on location and in the studio, editing your pictures with the latest software.   Video production and moving images are also part of the course, adding another layer to your creative skill set.

Build your confidence as you master new skills and techniques, and get the competitive edge to stand out in a competitive market with formal education and certification.  

Where can this course lead?

Employment opportunities available after completion are likely to be in the form of a trainee or as a photographic assistant. Successful completion will give direct entry to our HNC in Photography with further employment/self-employment options becoming available on successful achievement. 

What are the entry requirements?

Any of the following:

  • Two Nat 5 passes, to include English and Art and Design or a creative subject
  • NPA Photography at Level 5 or equivalent
  • FA in Creative and Digital Media 

You will be required to submit a digital collection of 6-10 photographs recently taken by you. This is your chance to show what you can do!

Applicants who do not meet any of the given criteria for entry but can show their aptitude and interest with examples of creative or photographic work, or demonstrate work experience in this area, could still have an opportunity to access the course at the discretion of the Course Leader. 

Where English is not the first language of the learner, it is recommended that they possess a relevant qualification in English for Speakers of Other Languages or have equivalent competency. 

What are the interview arrangements?

You will receive an offer based on your application and portfolio of digital images, and may be invited for interview.

Fees for full time is £1008

This course is eligible for Bursary.
