Intro to the course:

This course is suitable for those wanting a career as a senior care worker within a social care setting or to go to university to qualify in social work or community education. From this course, you can move into more advanced study (a degree in social work) or a registrable qualification with the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) to allow work in the social services sector.

Who is the course for?

This course is ideal for anyone wanting to start a career in the social services. It will suit school leavers or those looking to change career or progress into the industry.

What will I study?

You will  learn practical skills and theory for a career in social care.  This will  include a social care placement and  you will also take three SVQ social services and healthcare units. You will learn knowledge and skills  through groupwork, lectures, industry visits and guest speakers.

How will I be assessed?

Closed and open book assessments, practical assessment on placement, presentations, academic posters.

Why should I choose this course?

This course will provide you with the skills and knowledge for working in care and the social services. You will  be taught by experienced staff from the Health and Social Care team,  including social workers,  social science practitioners and allied health professionals.  During work placement  you will have the  opportunity of work experience with organisations such as South Lanarkshire Council, Blue Triangle, Salvation Army and third sector charities. This gives you the chance to develop your skills in the care field and to relate theory to practice.

Where can this course lead?

This course leads to jobs in care settings and services. Career progression depends on a satisfactory Disclosure Scotland PVG check.

What are the entry requirements?

  • minimum of  two Highers, one of which should be English or
  • minimum of one  Higher plus foundation apprenticeship in SVQ Social Services and healthcare  or
  • minimum  12 SQA National Units at Higher 
  • over 18 at the start of the course 
  • previous experience 
  • one suitable reference 
  • Disclosure Scotland PVG check 
  • satisfactory entry test 
  • satisfactory interview
  • acceptance may depend on interview
