Congratulations to South Lanarkshire College ESOL student Pegah Amiri who has just been given a conditional offer from Heriot-Watt and an unconditional offer from Strathclyde University to study Civil Engineering from September 2021.
Pegah came to Scotland from Iran in 2019. On arrival she wanted to enhance her English skills and researched to find the most suitable English as a Second Language (ESOL) course to match her ability.
Pegah said “I tried to find the best ESOL course to prepare me for the future. Eventually I found the Upper-Intermediate class in South Lanarkshire college and fortunately was offered a place”.
Pegah continued ” I loved my time at the College, the class was run by very experienced and sympathetic teachers. I was encouraged to progress by my lecturer, James Sweeney, his positive attitude has had a vital role in my success”
Pegah detailed the positive outcome of the course, stating: “Studying an ESOL course didn’t only improve my English, but it also motivated me to think more about what I wanted to do next, which I discovered was Civil Engineering. The ESOL course gave me the confidence to apply to university. I now have a conditional offer of a place at Heriot Watt and an unconditional place at The University of Strathclyde. I am very excited for my future.”
When asked if she had any advice for anyone considering studying ESOL Pegah said “If you intend to study at HE level in any field, you’ll need to understand English. The ESOL course is fantastic for this, it will increase your English skills and give you the confidence you need to apply for a college or University course, giving you career potential for the future.”
