Taylor Wimpey plastering employee Keenan Luczyn, a year two apprentice at South Lanarkshire College, shares his journey and experiences in the trade.
Finding a New Opportunity
“When I started my apprenticeship, I was with another company, but they made me redundant,” Keenan explained. “Luckily for me, my apprentice officer spoke with another employer she worked with, Taylor Wimpey, and they were happy to take me on, even though I was a 2nd year. Everyone on site supported me through my apprenticeship and were happy to answer questions to help me understand.”
Support and Learning at College
Alongside his on-site experience, Keenan also appreciated his time at South Lanarkshire College. “I really enjoyed coming to college as well,” he said. “I had really good lecturers that helped me when I was struggling with theory or some of the more intricate plasterwork.”
Overcoming Challenges
One of the more demanding aspects of his apprenticeship was compiling his portfolio. “At first, I found the portfolio a bit complicated, but the assessor and lecturer broke it down for me, and I was then able to gather the evidence I needed to complete it,” he recalled.
A Career-Defining Decision
Reflecting on his experience, Keenan is certain that choosing an apprenticeship was the right decision. “I think doing an apprenticeship was the best thing I could have done for my career. I got paid while I learned a trade and always had support. I would recommend an apprenticeship to anyone thinking about a trade.”
Employer’s Perspective
“Keenan was the first apprentice we had taken on mid-apprenticeship; we were unsure if we were doing the right thing as we did not know what his capabilities were,” a Taylor Wimpey representative explains. “But he was a lovely lad at the interview, and we gave him a chance. He has proven himself to be keen and fits in well with the Taylor Wimpey family and brand. I would encourage more employers to give opportunities to apprentices in these situations—everyone deserves a second chance.”
Keenan’s journey showcases the importance of apprenticeships in providing hands-on experience, career development, and the opportunity to overcome setbacks with the right support.
