Intro to the course:

At SCQF Level 6, NC Childhood Practice provides you with the learning and teaching you require to work in Early Learning and Childcare. This course offers a strong foundation of knowledge alongside a work placement, enabling you to develop the skills to work effectively with children from Birth – 12 Years. You will learn the necessary theory and practical skills through active learning, engaging discussion, external speakers, and most importantly in a fun environment!

Who is the course for?

This course is ideal for anyone wanting to start a career in the early years profession or moving on from National 5 Skills for Work Childcare (or equivalent).

What will I study?

Throughout this course, you will study the following units;

Child Development 

Child Development: Theory 

Services for Children and Young People 

Planning for Practice 

Planning for Practice: Workplace Experience 

Sociology of Childhood 

Providing and Inclusive Curriculum in Childhood Practice 

Protecting and Promoting the Rights of the Child 

Introduction to First Aid 

Coping Strategies and Building Resilience 

Supporting Children and Young People who Require Additional Support Learning 

In addition, you will also complete a work placement 2 days per week.

Next step course options

Once the course is successfully completed, you will have the knowledge and skills required for a support worker role in an early years establishment. 

 You could continue your learning journey with progression to HNC Childhood Practice (or other courses within the college) Progression is subject to references and NC practical placement reports

Where can this course lead?

Support worker role within an Early Learning and Childcare establishment private or council settings including Breakfast club, Out of School Care, Holiday Clubs. 

What are the entry requirements?

One or more of the following:

Four National 5 units at Grade C or above, one of which must be English or equivalent 

Your application will also be taken into consideration if you have achieved a Social Services Children & Young People Foundation Apprenticeship or have completed National 5 Skills for Work Childcare or NPA Playwork and Childcare. 

Suitable work experience in childcare is preferred but not essential 

Acceptance may depend on an interview, 2 references and you must be eligible to join the Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) scheme. 

Applicants whose first language is not English must have at least SQA ESOL National 5 or its equivalent. 

What are the interview arrangements?

Group or Individual Interviews will be carried out 

A copy of your qualifications must be available 

2 references will be required 

A criminal conviction form will be completed

This course is eligible for Bursary.
