Intro to the course:

The NC Applied Science provides you with a solid foundation on which to build your science progression pathway. Through the study of multiple different areas of science, you will be able to develop and progress in many areas of science and society. 

The course will help develop academic skills, underpinning scientific knowledge as well as practical skills. 

You will look at topics such as human disease processes, why food tastes the way it does, enhance your maths skills and consider how we can make our society more sustainable. In addition, you will have the opportunity to research and write a report on a topic of your choice as well as looking at careers within the science industry. 

These topics are selected to give a well rounded and in depth view of science and its impact on our lives.

Who is the course for?

This course is for a wide range of applicants who are looking to gain a formal qualification and progress in science. The NC Applied Science is extensive in its ability to support you in progression. 

You may be looking to leave school and come to college, you may be an adult returner who is looking to change career or have an interest in science. 

It can also help develop your confidence. If coming from school, the change to adult learning seem daunting. Learning your NC at College is a fantastic way to help with that transition. 

What will I study?

Within the NC Applied Science you will study a variety of science based subjects including: 

  • Chemistry

  • Human Anatomy and Physiology
  • Neurobiology & Immunology
  • Communications & Academic Skills
  • Sustainability
  • Practical Science. 

These subjects are designed to give you a wide range for progression as well as insight into the potential areas of science that you can work and study in.

Next step course options

The NC Applied Science allows you to progress in the HNC Applied Science. The NC gives you the underpinning knowledge required to progress into the higher level courses and from thereafter, university or employment. 

How will I be assessed?

Assessments take in a variety of ways which can include: 

  • Closed book assessments
  • Open book assessments
  • Posters
  • Presentations
  • Practical assessments. 

Your lecturer will give you the dates and details of the assessments for each unit.

Why should I choose this course?

This course is a great way to begin your journey into science and its associated subjects. 

Through the study of the human body, biology, chemistry and maths you will to begin developing the skills required to work in various areas such as ecology, conversation, zoology, laboratory research, and healthcare. 

Using our science laboratory and the expertise of the lecturing team you will be supported to progress and have access to a wealth of resources.  The science laboratory allows practical skills in chemistry, biology and human biology to be demonstrated.

We invite guest speakers, previous students and visit local university campuses to ensure you gain a full academic and practical science course experience. 

All our classes are taught on campus which is located near the town centre. We have study areas, catering facilities and onsite student support. 

Where can this course lead?

The NC Applied Science supports your development if you are looking to work as a trainee laboratory technician or within entry level jobs in science. 

This course helps you develop an array of practical skills that are in high demand within the Life Science and Chemical industry in Scotland, and worldwide.

What are the entry requirements?

For entry to the course, you require: 

  • 2 x National 5 units in science preferably (but not exclusively) in science (maths, chemistry, biology or physics)
  • Reference
  • Successful interview 
  • Personal statement detailing why you wish to attend the course. 

If you do not meet the entry criteria for this course, we may suggest another course for you.

What are the interview arrangements?

If successful in being offered and interview, you will be given a date and time to attend. Should you need to change this, please contact admissions. 

The interview will consist of a short presentation on the course by a member of the lecturing team, followed by an individual discussion to look at your reasons for applying as well as where you would like to progress to. 

You will also need to provide evidence of your qualifications, which can be sent to the college via email or shown at interview. 

If it is felt the NC Applied Science is not the best course for yourself, you may be offered a different course. 

Fees, finance and funding

Fees for full time is £1008

This course is eligible for Bursary.

Other information:

The college has on site student support services including learning support, study skills and counselling. Funding and financial advice is available on campus.

In addition, the library provides physical textbooks and access to electronic textbooks for you to use in your studies. 

The college has free car parking on site and is within walking distance of the town centre. 


Full time course: Full time - 2.5 days a week.
