Intro to the course:

Throughout this course you will develop a range of practical skills, competences and understanding of working in an office environment.  This will develop your expertise and practical experience working with IT and office equipment enhancing your career aspirations within the administrative sector.  As a result, this course will support your entry into employment as well as a higher level of study.  

This is a short full time course from January to June and on successful completion you will be offered a place on the HNC in Administration and Information Technology starting in August.

Who is the course for?

The principal aim of the course is to ensure you acquire the skills and knowledge needed to progress to a higher level course in administration and IT, or to move into employment in these areas.  

It is ideal for you: 

  • if you are progressing from the Introduction to Administration course here at SLC
  • if you have left school recently and are looking to progress to a full time HNC in August
  • if you are returning to education to make a career change
  • if you want to learn, or upgrade, your skills
  • if you want to make a career change

If you have a genuine interest in administration and IT, this course is for you.  

What will I study?

You will study:

  • Practical office skills and technologies
  • Research skills and preparing presentations
  • Front of office and reception skills
  • Customer care
  • Word processing using Microsoft Word
  • Spreadsheets using Microsoft Excel
  • Database using Microsoft Access
  • An Introduction to Audio

Next step course options

Successful achievement will give you direct access to the HNC in Administration and IT or HNC in Business Management

Further progression and achievement of an HND provides opportunities to apply for Year 3 entry to a relevant Degree programme

You will develop knowledge and understanding of effective working practices in a modern administrative and business environment, enabling you to provide a range of administrative support to an employer.  You will develop an understanding of using a range of software applications and will be introduced to planning and organisational skills.  An introduction to time management and the need for accuracy and efficiency in modern offices.  

On successful completion you will be offered a place on the HNC in Administration and IT or HNC in Business starting in August. 

Where can this course lead?

This course will provide you with sufficient training in administration and IT and an understanding of working in an office environment to provide opportunities for employment in various industry sectors. The entry level  job opportunities are wide and varied within many sectors. 

What are the entry requirements?

Any of the following:

  • Successful completion of the Introduction to Administration and IT course at SCQF level 4
  • 3 National 4s to include English, Maths or Application of Maths, and Business or Accounting
  • Relevant group of SQA National qualifications at SCQF Level 4
  • Equivalent recognised qualification

If English is not your first language, ESOL at an appropriate level or IELTS or equivalent with an entry score of 5.5 or above is recommended.

You will also need

  • good level of digital literacy
  • a genuine interest in office administration 

What are the interview arrangements?

All applicants will be invited to attend a group interview and information session. 

If English is not your first language you will be invited to a language assessment to ensure you are placed at an appropriate level of course.
