Intro to the course:

There is an increase in the role that community organisations and groups play within our lives and the support to others. As such it is a growing industry with increased employment and volunteering opportunities. 

By developing an awareness of the role that community organisations play in our lives, you will be equipped with the skill set to enter the industry prepared and ready to make a difference. 

Through the study of a variety of subjects, you will enhance and build your knowledge base, whilst also developing the skills set required to progress in academia. 

Subjects include psychology, working in communities, sociology, criminology and Preparation for Higher Education.

Who is the course for?

Anyone who is wishing to return to education or currently working in a voluntary capacity that wishes to gain a further understanding of working with communities.

What will I study?

You will be introduced to a plethora of topics including psychology, sociology, criminology and a valuable placement experience. In addition, we will look at the factors that impact community work whilst placing a strong emphasis on academic skills that be applied across a multitude of areas and used as your progress in education and vocational experiences. 

Next step course options

This course supports progression to the HND Year 1 Social Science and HNC Working with Communities. 

How will I be assessed?

A variety of assessment approaches are used including closed and open books. You will design posters and complete presentations that will be used to assess your progress on the course. 

You will be given your assessment schedule by the course team and support in your progress. 

Additionally the college has an excellent ‘Learning Hub’ on site that can help you in your studies, development of study skills, academic writing and much more.

This course helps you develop a better understanding of the skill sets and knowledge base required to work in Community, Voluntary and Third Sector organisations. 

What are the entry requirements?

There are no required qualifications for entry to this course. You could have recently left school, be looking to re-enter education or be interested in progressing with community and social science studies. 

You will be asked for provide a reference supporting your suitability for the course. Additionally, a Criminal Convictions Check will be completed due to the placement element of this course. If you have any concerns relating to this, please contact us for a private discussion.

There is no interview for this course, however based on your application, a member of the course team may phone you to discuss your details further.

There is a placement element to this course, allowing an exciting and in demand opportunity to gain real life experience of working in a community based organisation. Support will be provided to arrange this.
