Intro to the course:

Science, healthcare and STEM are crucial sectors for the economy and are dynamic, exciting areas to study and work in. 

This course is designed to support you to progress on to our HNC Applied Science course, through the study of subjects including Biology, Human Anatomy, Chemistry, Maths and Study techniques. The subjects are studied at National 5 and Higher level. 

In addition, we will support you in developing your ICT and academic writing - key skills for academia. 

The course team will support you to develop your knowledge and skills in the various areas of science , developing insight into the scientific developments. 

This course also supports progression towards health based courses such as podiatry, occupational therapy, nursing, paramedical science via the HNC Applied Science.

Who is the course for?

This course is suitable for pupils who have recently left school (over the age of 16) and wish to develop further their qualifications in science.

 Mature students are also welcomed on to the course as we link with the SWAP West organisation who help adults re-enter education and begin their journey towards a new carer.

What will I study?

The course is designed to meet the entry requirements of our HNC Applied Science, whilst also giving you insight into various subjects such as Psychology, Mental Health, Study Skills, Mathematics, Academic Writing, Chemistry and Biology. 

The subjects are taught at National 5 and Higher Level. 

Each unit has been selected to support your progress. 

Next step course options

This course, on successful completion, allows progression to the HNC Applied Science, which in turn supports progression to Paramedicine, Pharmacology, Microbiology,  Healthcare professions and much more.

You would also be eligible for our Uni of Glasgow Articulation route HNC program. 

How will I be assessed?

There are a variety of assessment techniques employed, including Closed book exams, Posters, Presentations and Open Books. The assessor will give you advance notice of the assessments and support is provided as required. 

There is no end of year assessment and units are assessed as you go. 

The college has an onsite Learning Support Team and Study Skills team based on our Learning Hub who can help you prepare and review assessment support for you. 

Why should I choose this course?

You will have access to the course team who are able to draw on their own experience within the subject area as well as their experience in teaching these subjects. 

Our dedicated science laboratory, allows you to complete practical experiments, whilst developing a firm theoretical knowledge. We work closely with external agencies such as SWAP West, laboratories, healthcare boards and Higher Education Institutes to ensure you have clear view of the opportunities open to you. 

The college has a wealth of facilities to ensure you have a positive learning journey including our Student Association, on site catering, student support and classes such as Mindfulness. 

Where can this course lead?

This course will not provide you with a vocational qualifications, however it can help you work towards gaining further career based qualifications. 

 

What are the entry requirements?

No formal qualifications are required. 

This course is suitable for a wide variety of individuals - perhaps you are wanting to re-enter education, need to gain further scientific knowledge to meet the entry qualifications for the HNC Applied Science, or just want to develop your knowledge base. 

You will be asked to supply a reference and your personal statement should detail why you wish to do the course. 

What are the interview arrangements?

There is no interview required, however based on your application, a course team member may give you a phone to discuss your details further.

Fees for full time is £1008

This course is eligible for Bursary.

Other information:

This course is designed to provide you with support and a knowledge base to allow you to progress towards the science and healthcare sector. 

The course is taught on campus with access to our Science Laboratory and the expertise of the lecturing team. You will be given guidance support and progression routes discussed with you to ensure you are fully informed of options available to you.
