This course is designed for those who wish to study a 2 year HND social science programme. It will help you to develop your understanding of social science, critical thinking, analytical, evaluative and problem-solving skills. The course offers a broad curriculum and opportunities to study a diverse range of subjects such as psychology, sociology, history, politics and research methods.

Who is the course for?

This course is ideal for anyone wanting to start a career in social science. The course will suit school leavers or those looking to change career or progress into the industry.

What will I study?

You'll learn analytical, evaluative, problem solving and critical thinking skills to understand social and cultural issues. Units include research and methodology, sociology and psychology, graded unit, politics and history. You'll learn through groupwork, lectures, industry visits and guest speakers.

Next step course options

On completion of year two HND Social Science progression may lead to: psychology, social science, criminal justice, sociology, social work, politics and degree programmes.

Closed and open book assessments.

This course will give you the skills, knowledge and experience to progress to second/third year of a university social science-related subject. This course can lead to employment within s range of public, education. voluntary and private sectors. Examples include social or youth worker, psychologist, counsellor, researcher, within the police or with a charity.

What are the entry requirements?

One or more of the following: 

  • minimum of one Higher at C grade or above 
  • SWAP Access to Social Sciences, dependent on grades or 
  • NQ in Social Sciences level 6 or 
  • other relevant NQ grouping at SCQF level 5/6 or 
  • equivalent award
  • acceptance may depend on interview

Interview with professional reference, essay and qualifications discussed.
