Intro to the course:

This course is for those who want to find out more about healthcare and who want to progress to higher level study. This NHS recognised course will give you skills and knowledge in topics such as safe working practice for care, therapeutic relationships, and understanding behaviour. It also covers clinical skills for practitioners, the human body in health and illness, and mental health.

Who is the course for?

This course is ideal for anyone wanting to start a career as a nurse, paramedic or healthcare practitioner. It will suit school leavers or those looking to change career or progress into the industry.

What will I study?

You'll learn skills and knowledge to help you progress into nursing, midwifery (additional study may be required for this branch of nursing) and allied health professional careers. You'll learn through work placement, groupwork, lectures, industry visits and guest speakers

Next step course options

  • degree programme in nursing, paramedic science and allied health professions 
  • possible entry to second year of the nursing degree at the University of the West of Scotland or Glasgow Caledonian University 
  • midwifery at university level (check university entry requirements - usually Higher English at B and National 5 Maths and HNC)

How will I be assessed?

Closed and open book assessments, practical assessment on placement, presentations, academic posters.

There are many job opportunities within healthcare. This course will provide you with practical skills and knowledge to progress to HND or university study. You'll be taught by experienced staff, including registered midwives and nurses, and have the chance of work experience with organisations such as NHS Lanarkshire, Sense Scotland, Capability Scotland and South Lanarkshire Council. This a popular course, so we encourage you to apply early.

Where can this course lead?

This course qualifies you to work at clinical support worker level. There are opportunities in healthcare organisations in the statutory, voluntary and independent sectors. Career progression requires a satisfactory Disclosure Scotland PVG check.

What are the entry requirements?

One or more of the following: 

  • at least two Highers, one of which should be English or 
  • at least one Higher plus Foundation apprenticeship in SVQ Social Services and healthcare or 
  • at least 12 SQA National Units at Higher 
  • full NC or SWAP programme 
  • Over 17 at the start of the course 
  • One suitable reference 
  • Satisfactory entry test 
  • Satisfactory interview 
  • Disclosure Scotland PVG check. 
  • Acceptance may depend on interview

One-to-one interview, written task and professional reference, PVG check.

Fees for full time is £1285
