Intro to the course:

This is an introductory course for those with no knowledge of British Sign Language (BSL), or who want to refresh their skills. 

The course includes: 

  • basic proficiency in BSL so you can understand and respond to basic greetings, colours, numbers and the alphabet
  • D/deaf awareness 
  • aspects of deaf history and culture

Who is the course for?

Ideal for those who haven’t previously studied BSL or who want to refresh their skills.

What will I study?

You'll develop basic proficiency in BSL, which will enable you to understand and communicate about everyday matters such as basic greetings, colours, numbers and the alphabet. The course also covers basic D/deaf awareness and aspects of deaf history and culture.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment of communicating with another user of BSL and understanding information provided in BSL.

Why should I choose this course?

You’ll gain a basic introduction to BSL, its history and communicating with the D/deaf Community. BSL is promoted by the Scottish Government and is a preferred language for D/deaf people.

Where can this course lead?

Future employment after further study working in the health and social care sector, and careers in school support and communication, additional support needs (ASN) or both.
